Elma and the Parks

At a recent city council meeting a group of residents asked the council to consider upgrades to the softball fields at 10th Street Park.  The council was generally supportive of using hotel-motel tax dollars for some of the needed improvements.

After listening to the group, I headed over to the park to look around.  I visit the park often with my grandchildren, but had never really paid attention to the ball fields.  The little league fields were in pretty good shape, but the softball fields reminded me of the movie “Sand Lot”.

After getting over the first shock, what I saw was an opportunity for the park to be turned into a gem by first updating the softball fields, then build a five-year vision for a redevelopment of the park. Redevelopment of the park may include ADA restroom access, low energy LED lights, an all abilities playground, and picnic shelters coupled with softball, baseball and soccer fields. These enhancements would not only create a place for our community to enjoy, but also enhance tourism.

As your city council member, I will make parks and recreation opportunities for everyone a high priority.
